Grading Policies:
Grading for both ELA and Social Studies will use the same format. Grading will be broken down into:
1.Homework (20%)
2.Classwork (20%)
3.Quizzes/Tests (25%)
4.Projects (25%)
5.Participation (10%): Note that this grade is not entirely based on how much students raise their hands to answer questions. It is also based activities that demonstrate students are listening, working hard, and on task.
**Note: One of my classroom policies is that once work is graded, students may then revise that work and resubmit it for a better grade. Students must take the initiative to revise themselves based on comments on the work and conferencing with me. They may resubmit the work as many times throughout the trimester as they want. The point of this is to ensure that work submitted is the best it could be and to understand that revision is the key to improving our reading and writing.
Daily Procedures (5th Grade)
1.Homeroom (8:10-8:30): During this time period, students have the ability to do whatever they need to do to set themselves up for success for the day. They can do homework, study, get their materials, or complete brain teasers found in the front of the room.
2.Snack: Students will be allowed to bring in a snack and eat it during ELA every day. They must bring in the snack during homeroom and place it in the bucket themselves.
3.Independent Reading (2:25-2:55): Students have independent reading every day . During independent reading they are responsible for choosing a book, although they are more than welcome to ask a teacher for guidance, complete an independent reading log, and to read silently for thirty minutes. Independent reading is vital to building up reading skills, as well as, fostering a love for reading.
3. Dismissal: Students will self dismiss at 3:00. Students are responsible for recording their homework themselves and deciding what they will need to bring home.
Steps for Success (5th and 6th Grade):
In our classroom, we are committed to helping your students succeed every single day. We have various classroom supports set in place to do so.
1.Classroom Management: In order to ensure stellar behavior from all students, we use a classroom clip chart and Class Dojo. The clip chart allows students to keep track of how they are doing that day, and the points they’ve earned. Classroom Dojo allows them to accumulate the points, as well as provides parents with the ability to see how their student is doing.
2.Independent Reading (only 5th): During independent reading, we prepare a short organization lesson a couple times a week in order to ensure that students are developing habits for middle school that they will use to succeed.
3.Early Finishers: Early finishers will always have activities in place to help them continue to use their brains whether it is a brain teaser or a writing prompt, based on the subject.
